History of Lough Cutra Castle
Lough Cutra Castle and Estate has a long and varied history with both highs and lows, including famine relief to the billeting of soldiers, a period as a convent and life as a private home. It was designed by John Nash who worked on Buckingham Palace, and was visited by guests such as Lady Augusta Gregory and WB Yeats. The countryside surrounding Lough Cutra contains much evidence of a history dating back hundreds of years. Read more about the Castle's History.
There are several on site activities at Lough Cutra Estate. We offer pike fishing (fly or spinner) on our private 1000 acre lake - you will be the only boat on the lake allowing complete concentration on the sport at hand. During the season there is also driven pheasant and duck shooting combining an energetic day out with a fine lunch in the Castle. Around the Estate there are a variety of trails offering opportunities for walking, running, cycling, bird watching in unspoilt woodlands and parkland. Within the locality there are numerous activities including hiking, sailing, surfing and golf. For further information see the drop down menus above.

Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon in Gort, Co. Galway has just been announced as a qualification race for the ETU European Triathlon Championships and ITU World Triathlon Championships, 2015 in both Olympic and Sprint distances. This is strong endorsement of the event by Triathlon Ireland, following on the announcement of the Olympic distance as a National Series race. Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon is part of The Castle Triathlon Series which consists of triathlon festivals in five historic Castles in England, France and Ireland. This is a genuine festival of triathlon with a race for everyone. Three junior races cater for children from 8-15 year olds and four adult races cover everything from Super Sprint right up to the new Gauntlet Middle Distance (half iron) race in 2014. All swims are in the beautiful Castle lake and the runs around the glorious grounds. The junior cycle routes are also inside the estate, The Gauntlet cycle route will be around the amazing lunar landscape of The Burren. Everyone is welcome to come in to the normally private Castle estate and enjoy the festival atmosphere, kiddie attractions, piper in the battlements and live music afterwards in the Castle Yard. Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon is a Triathlon Ireland sanctioned event and it must be both the most scenic and the friendliest triathlon in the country. “It’s a real coup to be selected as a qualifier race for the World Champs" enthused Race Director, Brian Adcock of Castle Triathlon Series, "It’s a great venue with superb courses and can take a huge volume of entrants". An additional attraction is the three-way international race between Ireland, France and the title holders England. Already elite athletes from all three countries are jostling for entry. Matt Molloy, Amy Wolfe and Rory Maguire are all looking forward to returning next year and they'll be joined by exceptional talents like professional long course athlete Paul Hawkins. General entry levels are very high. 2013 showed a doubling of numbers over the inaugural year in 2012. Around 1,000 triathletes are expected for 2014, but unlike many venues, Lough Cutra has an enormous capacity for entries and numbers are unlikely to be capped. Registration is now open on www.loughcutratri.ie, and with a whopping 30% discount early bird offer, now's the time to get booking. Full course details and maps of The Gauntlet course will be available on the website shortly.
